Buenos Aires Governor Mourns Death of Union Leader

The Governor of Buenos Aires Province, Axel Kicillof, expressed his sorrow on Thursday over the death of the General Secretary of the Union of Subway and Premetro Workers (AGTSyP), Roberto “Beto” Pianelli. “We lament the death of Beto Pianelli, a great union leader committed to the struggle for workers' rights. My condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones,” the provincial head stated on his social media network X. The co-founder of the union of subway delegates, who was a patient at risk due to a kidney transplant, was hospitalized in a health center in Buenos Aires City. His condition worsened due to a nosocomial infection, which led to his untimely death at the age of 59. During his tenure, he advocated for the reduction of the working day due to asbestos exposure on the subway lines, a situation he denounced as a health hazard for workers until his last days. His political activism was a fundamental part of his private and union life: for many years he was part of the national leadership of New Encounter, and in the latter part of his career he had linked himself to Kicillof's Movement for the Right to the Future, according to the Argentine News Agency.
